project proposal: Ali Herman
:I love being an art major. I get to take classes for my concentration, as well as experience other types of art. My friends get jealous when I tell them the art classes I am taking. They wish they could take different art classes and have it count towards their major. Because I am new to the art department and to art in general, even though I am having fun, it is often easy for me to become intimidated by all the options. There are many different mediums and forms of art, and my experience in these forms and mediums is generally extremely limited or simply non existent. Being new to the art field, I really want to be able to take advantage of everything that it has to offer, and I want to be comfortable with what I am bringing creatively to each class. Therefore, I want my theme for printmaking to be things that make me happy. This may sound extremely general, but I feel that if I am making prints of things that make me happy, I will feel more comfortable in this new setting, more specifically with the printmaking. It is something that I have never done before, and if I am making prints of things that are enjoyable to me, it will be easier to make printmaking enjoyable. Artists, in general, always produce art that makes them happy. Each artist has different thoughts and ideas about what makes him/her happy, but in the end, they use those thoughts and ideas to produce beautiful pieces of work that they are comfortable with and that they enjoy. Again, being new to the art field leaves me with minimal knowledge about artists in different fields, including relief printmaking. As the semester continues, I hope to increase my knowledge of artists not only in printmaking, but in other fields of art as well. With that knowledge, I will apply certain techniques seen from works of art to my own, and will hopefully be able to develop a new style of artwork for myself, and produce works of art that I did not know I could produce.

I think that you had really nice control with carving the letters. I enjoy the playfulness at which you approach your pieces, and I think that you could make them even stronger by experimenting with composition. I think that that would eliminate that feeling of the image floating on a background and would give a sense of environment to the picture.
i really love how balanced and symmetrical your piece is. Since your theme is things that you find comforting, the really stable, static composition is absolutely perfect for enhancing that concept. it makes me think you are probably a very calm, even-keeled person in general :)

the woodgrain that shows up on your print really helps draw the eye to the central"eye". i also really enjoy the symmetry and balance in your piece; everything is very clean and precise.
Really nice bold image. Good balance of line – thick around the palm contrasted with the delicate and flowing lines for the vine. It is consistent in its very clean and organized look.
A simple design has a pretty in-depth meaning to you. I'm looking forward to seeing this pineapple around in your other prints, along with a possible text theme perhaps?
